Here Are The Phones That Will Fit Your 'Fallout 4' Pip-Boy Edition

Imagine this scenario: You recently contributed $119 to a Kickstarter campaign for an upcoming mobile RPG from one of your most respected developers. Good news, the project was successfully funded! Now the developer chooses this point in time to tell you which mobile operating system the game will be published on. Wait a minute, that seems backward. But that’s essentially what Bethesda has done now that production has ceased and pre-orders have wrapped on Fallout 4‘s coveted Pip-Boy Edition..

I’m exaggerating to prove a point, but still. Today the publisher announcedwhich smartphones would actually fit inside the life-size, wearable Pip-Boy replica everyone’s been drooling over. The device includes foam inserts that will fit the following: iPhone 6, iPhone 5/5s, iPhone 4/4s, Samsung Galaxy S4, and the Samsung Galaxy S5.
The largest phone on the list is Samsung’s Galaxy S5, measuring 5.3-inches by 2.25-inches, which means Galaxy Note and iPhone 6+ owners are out of luck.
Granted, that magical Pip-Boy immersion happens primarily via a second-screen app that can be installed to any Android or iOS device — even tablets. And I’ll concede that most pre-orders these days can be canceled and refunded without consequence right up until the release date, but it would have been more respectful for Bethesda to announce which phones would fit into the Collector’s Edition before it sold out so ridiculously fast.
Then again, it sold out ridiculously fast. And yes, I am unabashedly part of the problem. I typically preach against pre-ordering, but you better believe I snatched up that PC Collector’s Edition the second it went on sale for fear of it being in short supply and popping up on eBay EBAY -0.89% for some exorbitant price later this year right now. I prioritized my desire to have it over common sense and compatibility. I’m sure Bethesda counted on that.
After all, it’s a stupid gimmick. But as Fallout 4 director Todd Howard said in one of the most quotable lines in the history of the game industry, “this is the best f***ing one I’ve ever seen.”
If your phone doesn’t make the cut, fear not: I have a feeling that with the rising popularity of 3D printing and Etsy, someone out there — legalities aside — may just cater to your phone.
