'Dance India Dance Season 5' first episode review : More Drama than Dance

What would you call a show which claims to be the best dance reality show of India, but gives you a dose of stupid over-acted melodrama after every 5 minutes? ‘Dance India Dance’ built a niche for itself, giving the industry dancers like Salman Yusuf Khan, Dharmesh, Raghav Juyal and Punit Pathak. With a talented judge panel of Terrance Lewis, Geeta Tondon and Remo D’Souza the show had successfully covered four seasons. The fifth season of the show kick started yesterday with first round of auditions in Delhi. The panel of judges is totally new and fresh consisting of Mudassar Khan, Gaiti Siddiqui and Punit Pathak. While Mudassar has judged the contestants in season 4 too, it was a totally new experience for the other two judges. The show started with some brilliant performances and level increased with every dance move. While contemporary dancers won the hearts of the audience as well as the judges, few comic elements were infused to keep the ‘drama’ in ‘reality show’ going.
The show was fine and it is too soon to judge the dancers as the show is in the audition round. However, a melodramatic scene was created when a contestant demanded ‘Taqdeer ki Topi’ from the judges. And when the request was denied his father came up on stage and threatened the judges stating the usual ‘Aap jante nai mai kaun hun’. Punit seemed furious and after a good exchange of heated words, it was revealed that all

In the coming days we hope that the show moves above the cheap gimmicks and do what it does the best, produce talented dancers.
this was staged by Mudassar Khan, as per to welcome Punit on his new venture as a judge. The whole staged drama was too much and made us question the fact that how ‘real’ such reality shows are becoming in
order to generate TRP’S. Why can’t they just trust their original content of promoting and highlighting good dancers, it’ll save time and brains of both the creators as well as the viewers. Watching meaningless melodrama on Indian television is no less than a pain and if credible reality shows will venture into the line of staged drama, it will only lead to a lower level of entertainment meant for no one.
The other annoying thing about the one hour long episode was the hand gestures of judge Mudassar Khan. Someone really needs to tell him that they are annoying for the viewers. It has just been one episode and it’s too soon to say anything about how the show would turn out. However, the results would be amazing if the creators focus on the base content of promoting and highlighting dance and dancers and not brainstorming in staging actors and situations which are anything but hilarious and lower the IQ levels of the viewers.
The talent is out there, ready to be found, polished and perform in front of the Grand Master (Mithun Chakraborty) all we hope is the show moves above the cheap gimmicks and do what it does the best, produce
talented dancers.
