4 things you need to know about encounter specialist Daya Nayak

Encounter specialist Daya Nayak was suspended from active duty on July 3 by the Maharashtra Police. Earlier, Nayak had been suspended for six years after allegations of disproportionate assets were levelled against him by former journalist Ketan Tirodkar. However, in 2006, Daya was cleared of all charges by the Maharashtra court.
Here are four things about the encounter specialist you didn't know.
-Daya was born in Udupi district, Karnataka. In 1979, he moved to Mumbai and began working in hotels and as a supervisor with a plumber to make a living.
-Daya joined the Mumbai Police in 1995 as a trainee and rose to become the city's leading encounter specialist in late 1990s. As a member of the Detection Unit, Daya is said to have shot dead more than 80 gangsters including three Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives. 
-In 2000, as a tribute to his village, Daya built a school in his native village Yenneholle, 70 km from Mangalore, called Radha Nayak Government High School. Among those present at the school's inauguration was Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan.
-Daya Nayak was known for best fighting the underworld nexus.  His career as an encounter specialist began in Mumbai, when he shot two gangsters from Chhota Raja's gang on December 31 in Juhu.
