Yesterday saw another long-awaited milestone reached in the quest for an iOS jailbreak. Chinese team TaiG has finally released another tool that allows iOS device users to jailbreak their devices. The tool works and allows you to jailbreak iOS 8.3, which is the current version of Apple's AAPL -0.56% iOS.
Update: A new TaiG tool is now available, which fixes issues with the installation and non-working jailbreak tweaks. This removes the need to use iFile as I previously mentioned in this guide.
Why should you jailbreak your device? Put simply, I wouldn’t own an iPhone if I couldn’t jailbreak it. The lack of customization compared to Google's GOOGL -0.9% Android is stark yet Apple remains fixed on locking down its devices, offering owners little by way of tweaking the operating system and its features to their liking. In fact, many of iOS’s current features, such as the Control Centre have come from customizations first thought of in the jailbreaking community. There’s a huge amount more on offer too and not just operating system tweaks but entire apps as well.
I’ll be taking a look at these soon but in the meantime, here’s how to jailbreak you device. It’s not illegal and you won’t ‘brick’ your device either. To remove the jailbreak, all you need to do is hit restore in iTunes, load your last backup and you’ll be good as new. Apple will be none the wiser and you won’t void your warranty. One word of advice, though – Apple will no doubt patch the jailbreak in the next release of iOS, so you only have a limited window to apply it and there won’t be another tool released for months, maybe not even this year.
Step 1.
Download the TaiG jailbreak from here. It’s Windows-only for the moment and there’s no word on a Mac version yet. Place the application on your desktop for easy access. This is the only official website to download it from.
Step 2.
